Medical Radiation Safety Program

The Ohio State University's Medical Radiation Safety Program ensures that all clinical and research uses of radioactive materials and radiation generating equipment are conducted safely to promote a safe working environment for OSU employees as well as members of the general public. It is the goal of this program to oversee the safe use of all forms of ionization radiation used in conjunction with humans for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes at all OSU Medical Center locations including but not limited to OSUCCC-The James, University Hospital, University Hospital East, Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, The James at Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza, JamesCare at University Hospital East, CarePoint Lewis Center, CarePoint Gahanna, Macy’s Easton Towne Center, and other locations as deem applicable to the facilities specific uses of ionizing radiation.

The OSU Medical Radiation Safety Program is designed to meet and exceed the requirements of the OSU License for Radioactive Materials, Radiation Generating Equipment registrations, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) regulations, ODH guidance and other applicable regulatory and/or oversight agencies. OSU is fully committed to the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) concept of promoting a safe working environment while adhering to all applicable regulations and guidance.

Sources of ionizing radiation can be found at a variety of locations within OSU Medical Center locations, common examples include:

      ●     Unsealed Radioactive Materials
              •   Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures

      ●    Sealed Radioactive Materials / Sources
              •   Manual and Automated/Remote
              •   Brachytherapy
              •   Therapeutic Devices
              •   Sealed sources for calibration and quality control

      ●     Radiation Generating Equipment – Diagnostic and Therapeutic
              •   X-rays
              •   Computerized Tomography
              •   Linear Acceleration (LINAC)
              •   Fluoroscopy
              •   PET/CT
