Hot work is one of the leading causes of construction fires.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 4,440 structure fires each year result from hot work. Below are some practices that hot work operators and site personnel should abide by to safeguard their construction site:
- Ensure that the hot work permit is approved and posted prior to work beginning, and that all smoke detectors are disabled.
- Clear the worksite of any hot work hazards, ensure all floor and wall openings are covered, and employ fire retardant curtains.
- Securing and controlling a water source in the event that a spark ignites or contributes to an additional hazard.
- Ensure safety procedures during and concluding hot work are followed: a fire watch must take place 30 minutes after concluding work.
