Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Safety Brief - Fume Hoods vs Biosafety Cabinets

Right Equipment, Right Protection

Chemical Fume Hoods or Biosafety Cabinets

Understanding when to use a chemical fume hood versus a biosafety cabinet (BSC) is critical for maintaining both personal and environmental safety. Here is a quick guide, but note that this guidance does not apply to every situation. Refer to your specific protocols or consult with EHS.

Chemical Fume Hoods

  • For working with chemical hazards such as volatile solvents or toxic gases.
  • Use for tasks that can produce harmful vapors, fumes, or particulates
  • Protects the user and the environment from chemical exposure

Biosafety Cabinets

  • For working with biological hazards, including infectious agents
  • Use to contain biological materials to prevent exposure or cross-contamination
  • Protects the product and the user from biological contamination.
