Good Catch Spotlight - Explosive Compound

Your safety is our top priority. Students, faculty, staff, visitors and patients are encouraged to report conditions that they believe could have resulted in more serious consequences so proper actions can be implemented to prevent future injuries or property damage. A recent example of a Good Catch is listed below.

Incident TitlePotentially Explosive Compound Found in Chemical Fume Hood

Incident TypeUnsafe Condition

Incident SummaryDuring a routine laboratory walk-through, a professor  noticed a concerning compound had been synthesized inside of a chemical fume hood. The professor quickly determined the material had the potential to be shock sensitive and if detonated, could release a toxic gas.

Corrective Actions - After assessing the situation the professor’s department made the decision to evacuate the west side of the building as a precaution. Once more information presented itself, it was determined that some of the building occupants could return safely, however the room containing the compound remained closed. EHS coordinated with a high hazard crew to safely dispose of the compound. Crew members were able to remove the compound and associated glassware from the fume hood and eliminate the hazard. As one of the corrective actions, the department sent an e-mail to all faculty, staff and students to remind them of safe working procedures that must be followed in all laboratories.
